Uterine Fibroids Procedure

What are uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that grow on or within the muscle tissue of the uterus. There are different types of fibroids, and they can range in size. You might experience the following symptoms:

  • Excessive menstrual bleeding

  • Pelvic pain or pressure

  • Frequent urination

  • Constipation and/or bloating

  • Pain in the back of the legs

  • Pain during sexual intercourse

  • An enlarged abdomen

What treatment do you offer to get rid of the fibroids?

Not all fibroids have to be removed. They only have to be removed if they are causing symptoms like those above. However, if fibroids are the cause of your symptoms, we offer the uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) procedure. Talk with your doctor at MACH to see if this is a possibility.

What is uterine fibroid embolization (UFE)?

  • When the interventional radiologist has reached the location of the fibroids via a catheter, very small spheres called embolic material are injected through the catheter and into the blood flow leading to the uterine fibroid tumors.

  • The embolic material blocks the vessels around the fibroid, depriving it of oxygenated blood.

  • The oxygen deprivation results in the fibroids shrinking.

  • Patients usually stay anywhere from four to 23 hours after the procedure is complete.

  • Does not require general anesthesia.

  • No tissue is surgically removed and the uterus is preserved.
